Chapter 17: Of My Own Free Will

The hall exploded.

Lords were on their feet, shouting over each other, and a woman in the third row screamed.

"Three?"

"The king's heirs?"

"It's not possible!"

"It's the Archivist's ledgers, you fool, it's all written down!"

Gerard did not shout.

He grabbed my arm and pulled me against his chest, and his fingers sank in above my elbow.

"The bride carries the king's get," he called, and the hall went quiet to hear him. "Under the law of the nursery, any child of a king belongs to the Court."

"Let go of her," Bastian said.

"The mother is released with a settlement. She has already been paid. Fifty million, and she kept it." He smiled out at the rows. "She has her money. The Court takes the children."

"I earned that money," I said through my teeth. "Every night for a year, at your table."

"Hunters. Escort the lady to the nursery wing."

Two of them started up the steps.

Bastian lunged.

His knees went out from under him on the second stair, and Merrick caught him by the belt before he hit the stone.

I saw Bastian's face, gray and wet, and the red running through his fingers.

He was dying in front of me, and I was being dragged away from him.

I stamped down on Gerard's instep with my heel.

He grunted and loosened his grip, and I tore free and ran to my husband.

I dropped to my knees and put my arms around him.

"Ellie," he said, and it was the first time he had ever called me that.

"Don't talk."

"Go. Take the babies and go."

"I'm done running." I pulled his head against my shoulder. "Archivist!"

"Child?"

"Tell them the law."
