Chapter 7: For the Cameras
"Three rules," Rhys said in the car.
The Hartwell Children's Benefit was in an hour. Photographers lined the red carpet outside the hotel.
"My lawyer says the same thing yours does," I said. "Show up together, look calm, say nothing."
"Rule one. We arrive as allies. You're my brother's wife, and you're under my protection until the divorce is final."
"And rule two?"
"We don't touch beyond the show." His eyes stayed on the window. "A hand at your back on the carpet. Nothing else. Nothing in private."
"That's a little insulting."
"It's the opposite of insulting," Rhys said. "Rule three: you vote with me for ninety days, and then you owe me nothing."
"Ninety days. Then I walk."
"Then you walk."
I put out my hand, and he looked at it, and shook it with his warm hand.
On the carpet his palm settled at the small of my back, barely touching.
Even through the green silk I felt it all the way up my spine.
Inside the ballroom, everyone stopped talking.
Then they all resumed, louder.
"Annika." Augustin came through the crowd with a drink in one hand and a smile that did not reach his eyes. "How brave of you to come."
"Chairman."
"You're thin. Is my son feeding you?" He glanced at Rhys. "Or is it the other one who's doing the feeding?"
"Careful," Rhys said.
"I'm only worried for her." Augustin lowered his voice, but not by much. "She's a widow's daughter with nothing left but a few shares. She doesn't know what Rhys wants with her. Do you, my dear?"
