Chapter 17: The Cup

By midnight the whole kitchen at Blackthorn Hall was awake and angry.

Addie had pushed me into the chair nearest the stove and wrapped me in two quilts.

The pain had settled into a long ache that rose and fell with my breath, and the healer's tea sat steaming at my elbow.

I'd checked it twice for thornroot.

"Right," Addie said, banging a pot on the range. "Here's what we have."

The empty tonic cup stood on the table with its black crust.

Beside it was the brown jug from my bedroom shelf, with two inches of the morning batch left in the bottom.

"That's proof," Addie said. "That's a cup and a jug, and an old woman who said she knows thornroot. If Verity won't drink in front of the moon, we've got nothing to make her."

"She'll drink," I said.

"Why?"

"Because she's proud. Because I'm going to ask her in front of both packs, in her father's treaty, and it's the host's own law that whoever pours must drink." I looked up. "She won't be able to refuse without saying why."

Burke came in from the yard with rain on his shoulders.

"The elders are with us," he said. "Not all. Enough. The old one with the cane says she'll stand in the circle."

"And the pack?"

"Half the kitchens and every patrol," Burke said. "They watched you go to your knees on that dais, Lin. They don't want Greywater to take it."

Bram stood in the doorway.

He hadn't said a word in an hour.

He knew how large his mistake was, and he wasn't going to ask anyone to make it smaller.

"I'll take her up," he said to Addie. "She should lie down."

"She should eat first."

"I'll eat after," I said.

Addie looked from me to him, and she picked up the pot again.
