Chapter 23: Quiet House

Linnea's POV

Three weeks after the birth, the healer said I was whole, and I believed her the moment she left the room.

The cradle stood at the foot of our bed, a wide oak one that Burke had built.

All three of them were asleep in it, in a heap, with their fists up beside their ears.

Two boys and a girl, as it turned out, and not one of them had wanted to come out alone.

I stood over them in my nightgown and counted fingers for the fourth time.

Bram came up behind me and put his chin on my head.

"They haven't got a name yet," he said. "The pack's been calling them Lefty, Righty and Boss."

"Which is which?"

"The girl is Boss."

"Of course she is."

I turned in his arms.

He had been so gentle with me for three weeks that I could have screamed.

He slept on the edge of the bed, and kissed my forehead, and carried the tea up the stairs himself.

"Bram."

"Mm."

"I healed. I'm well. You can stop treating me like I'll break."

His eyes went dark.

"The healer said."

"The healer said what she said." I took his hand and set it on my hip, on the soft new curve there. "I'm telling you."

He kissed me.

It wasn't careful at all, and I made a sound against his mouth.

He lifted me against his chest and I wrapped my legs around his waist and he walked us to the far side of the room, away from the cradle, to the old leather chair under the window.

He sat, with me astride him.

I pushed his shirt up and off, and put my mouth on the scar through his ribs.

"Lin."

"Don't you dare be slow."
