Chapter 14: Cancelled by M. Cowell
Josiah's floor was the thirty-sixth, and it was quiet.
He took us past rows of empty desks to a small room at the back, with no window and one long table.
"Nobody comes in here," he said. "It's where I keep the things I don't trust anyone else to touch."
He sat down at a laptop, and the three of us pulled up chairs behind him.
"Tell me what I'm looking for," he said to me.
"The day I came for my interview."
"The lobby log is one piece. The calendar is the other." His fingers moved fast. "Every invitation in this company has a history. Who made it, who changed it, who deleted it."
A grid filled the screen.
At the top was a line with my name.
Interview, D. Birchall. Nine o'clock. Attendees: A. Pryde, G. Mallender, J. Wray.
Beside it was a column of small grey words.
Created, Monday, by the recruiting desk.
Cancelled, 8:52 a.m., by M. Cowell.
Restored, 10:07 a.m., by M. Cowell.
"She cancelled it twenty-two minutes after I sat down," I said. "And put it back right after I stood up."
"So that no one would find a cancelled meeting in the morning," Josiah said. "And no email went out to you. She saw to that too."
Gray leaned in until his shoulder pressed mine.
"One time," he said. "Maybe a mistake."
Josiah did not answer.
He clicked once.
The screen changed to a long list, and the list kept going down.
It was dated years back, with a name in each row that had been blacked out by the software, and the same two words beside every one.
Cancelled, M. Cowell.
Cancelled, M. Cowell.
Cancelled, M. Cowell.
"Thirty-one," Josiah said quietly. "Dinners, lunches, one-on-ones. Every one of them with a woman any of us had shown the smallest interest in."
