Chapter 6: Gray's Apartment

I lay awake in the guest room until the house went quiet, and I thought about what Meredith had said.

Ask what happened to the last one.

I thought about it for a long time.

Then I thought about Gray's mouth on the red marks on my wrist in front of fourteen people.

I got up, and put my mother's jacket over my nightdress, and went down the hall in bare feet.

Gray's door was at the far end, and a line of light showed under it.

I knocked once.

He opened it in a white T-shirt and grey sweatpants, with his hair standing up, and when he saw me his whole face changed.

"I'm not asking for a promise," I said. "I'm not asking about the last one either. I'm asking you to keep what you said on the porch."

He looked at me for a second.

Then he caught my wrist, gently, the sore one, and drew me into the room and shut the door.

"Say it again," he said. "What you want."

"You. Now."

"Good," Gray said, and kissed me.

It was hungry, and he laughed against my mouth while he did it, and his hands went into my hair.

He backed me against the door.

My jacket slid off my shoulders to the floor, and he pulled my nightdress up over my head in one move.

I stood there in my underwear with the cold air on my skin and his eyes going over me.

"God, Daphne," he said. "Look at you."

"You've seen me in a dress."

"I haven't seen this."

He dropped to his knees.

He put his mouth on my stomach, and then lower, and he hooked his fingers into my underwear and drew it down my legs.

"Gray."

"I said I'd put my mouth between your legs until you forgot that man's name." He looked up at me. "I meant it."

He lifted one of my legs over his shoulder.

His tongue went slowly up through the wet of me, and I made a sound I had never made in my life.
