Chapter 18: His Daughter Handled It
Quentin pulled on his trousers in the dark and opened the door himself.
Two detectives stood in the hall, a woman in a gray coat and a younger man behind her.
"Quentin Holloway?" the woman said. "I have a warrant. You're to come with us and answer questions about missing company funds."
"I'll come," Quentin said.
I stepped into the doorway in Rhiannon's bathrobe.
"His own board filed it," I said. "The man who runs that board confessed to me last night, and I have it recorded."
The detective looked at me for a long moment.
"The board is holding a press conference at nine," she said. "I read the filing. It's strange for people who've accused a man to invite the cameras before the state has filed a single charge."
"Then take him there."
"Ma'am?"
"Bring him to the room, and let me play you what I have. If I'm wrong, you can take him from the lobby."
She weighed it.
Rhiannon's spare phone buzzed on the counter behind me, the old one she had left on the counter for me.
She had sent me the file at three in the morning, with one line.
Saved it in three places. Go get him.
"Nine o'clock," the detective said. "Not a minute later."
At five to nine, we stepped out of the elevator on the fourth floor.
The boardroom doors stood open.
Two cameras on tripods faced the head of the long table, and a dozen reporters sat in the folding chairs along the wall.
Gilbert VanDerzee stood at the head of the table in a navy suit, with Gretchen at his shoulder and the board in a row beside him.
