Chapter 16: The Good Day
Cordelia Kenworthy took the nearest microphone off its pole herself.
Nobody had ever seen her do that.
"I am Cordelia Kenworthy," she said.
"On October ninth I called Priscilla Odom a thief."
"It was false."
"She took nothing from this company in twenty years, and I knew it when I said it."
"She wrote to me and asked to be heard, and I made sure she was not."
"That is mine to answer for, and I will."
She lowered the microphone.
"May I see her?" she asked me, quietly, not for the cameras.
"Tomorrow, in the garden at two."
"Bring something that isn't an apology."
She nodded.
On Saturday the sun came out over St. Anne's.
Behind the pond there was a brick grill and a long table under a pergola, where families cooked on good days.
Two volunteers had wheeled my mother out in a blanket and a straw hat.
She sat at the head of the table.
Piers stood at the grill in his shirtsleeves with a wooden spoon.
"No beans," Pris said.
"I wasn't going to add beans."
"You had a can in your hand."
"I was holding it for comfort."
She watched him stir a black iron pot of chili, and she pointed at the spice jars.
"A pinch more cumin."
"A square of the dark chocolate."
