Chapter 11: The Assistant

The driver had his hand on the door handle.

He was a gray-haired man who'd driven my father for twenty years and had never said more than "Morning, miss" to me.

He looked at me in the mirror.

"Miss Devlin?"

"It's okay," I said. "Can you just drive? Not home. Somewhere with coffee."

He looked at the girl on the floor of his car.

Then at me.

Then he put on his seatbelt.

"I know a place," he said.

He took us to a diner on Ogden with a pie case by the register and a waitress who called everybody hon.

I texted Dez one word from the back seat.

Diner.

Then the address.

He got there in nineteen minutes, which meant he'd used the lights.

He slid into the booth next to me, across from the assistant.

She had both hands around a mug of coffee she wasn't drinking.

She looked at his badge, then at me, then back at the badge.

"You knew," she said to me. "In the meeting. You knew I was telling the truth."

"Yes."

"And you didn't say anything."

"No."

Her mouth trembled.

"Why?"

I looked at Dez.

He gave me the smallest nod.

"Because there are seven kids," I said. "And if Verity finds out what I know before we find them, they disappear."

The assistant stared at me.

Then she put her face in her hands and laughed, a terrible wet laugh.

"God," she said. "Okay. Okay. That's actually a reason."

The waitress brought three slices of cherry pie nobody had ordered.

"You all look like you need it, hon," she said, and left.

Dez ate his in four bites.

The assistant didn't touch hers.

"Tell us about the phone call," Dez said.

She took a breath.

"Last Thursday. She was in her office with the door almost shut. I was bringing her the gala seating chart and I heard her say, 'You'll have her before Christmas. I'll bring her to you myself.'"
