Chapter 16: Sunday Circuit
Dez's lieutenant gave him six officers, two cars, and a warning.
"If that kid isn't on those steps," he'd said, "you're writing parking tickets till Easter."
I sat in the back of an unmarked van a block from the church at ten-fifty on Sunday morning, taking my legs off.
Dez watched me do it with his arms folded.
"I hate this," he said.
"I know."
I'd dressed the way I used to.
An old gray sweatshirt from a thrift store, a knit hat pulled down, a paper cup.
No parka.
No glass eye, either.
I'd taken it out in the van and put on the black patch I'd worn at eight.
The empty legs of my jeans were pinned up behind my knees with safety pins, the way Uncle liked.
"Talk to me one more time," he said.
"I sit on the right side, in the shade. Nobody gives in the shade, so nobody will wonder why I'm there. The regular kids won't know me in a hat. The van comes at noon for the cups."
"And when the van comes?"
"The driver sees me. He'll come straight for me. He owes me a nose."
Then he crouched down in front of me, in the van, and took my face in both hands.
He didn't kiss me.
He just held it, very carefully, and looked at me with the patch and all.
"You come back," he said.
"I always come back," I said. "Ask anyone."
Two of his officers carried me to the steps in a wheelchair and left me there.
It was eleven-twenty.
The bells were going.
The stone steps were cold through my jeans in about a minute.
People came up the steps in good coats.
Most of them looked away from me fast.
I'd been gone eleven weeks and the cold still found the exact same places in my hips.
