Chapter 9: No Kissing at Work
I pushed the door open.
Willa jumped, and the phone dropped onto her bed.
"Darby! I didn't hear you."
"The door was open."
"I was just talking to my mom." Her face was wet, and her smile was already coming back. "She worries."
"It sounded like Dane."
She stopped.
It was a small stop, no longer than a blink.
"Oh, that. He called, and I was upset, and I said some silly things." She laughed and wiped her cheeks. "You know how I get. I told him I did it for us, I just meant that I told him about Nightlight for both of us. So we could start fresh."
"And the part where I'm lying about the song?"
"I never said that."
"I heard you."
"You must have heard wrong." She reached for my hand. "Darby, I'd never. You're my friend. You saved me on that roof."
I looked at her fingers around mine.
They were warm now.
"What song did you hum to him, Willa?"
"Oh, nothing special. Little scraps. I made them up as I went."
"You told Dane you'd forgotten the tune."
"Did I?" She tilted her head. "I forget everything when I'm nervous."
She was good.
I could not find a seam in her, not one.
I squeezed her hand and let go.
"Get some sleep," I said.
"You too. And thank you. For everything."
I closed the door behind me and stood in the hall with my back against the wall.
She had never once said which song.
On Saturday afternoon the pool was closed for a swim meet setup, and I had the whole building to clean.
