Chapter 22: My Own Front Door

I told Preston at the breakfast table, with a pancake the size of a coin in front of me.

"I'm going back to the flat."

He put his fork down.

"The baker told you the building was sold," he said. "To me."

"Yesterday. Without asking me."

"I know. I bought it so nobody could ever take that flat from you again. I'll sign it over, or burn the deed, whichever you say."

"Neither. Hold it, and I'll pay you rent."

His eyebrows went up.

"Real rent," I said. "On the first of the month."

Poppy, beside him, said, "Which flat?" with her mouth full.

"The bakery one, bug. With the balcony."

"Can Dad come?"

I looked at him.

He looked back, perfectly neutral, and I knew exactly how hard he was holding his face.

"I'm not asking you to leave the villa," I said. "I'm telling you where I'll be. I want my own door, and my own key, and my own bed in a place where I paid for the coffee."

"All right."

"I'm not running," I said. "This time I'm choosing."

"I know the difference now," said Preston.

"So there's a spare room in a building where I'm your tenant, and you can have dinner with Poppy five nights a week, like it said on the list."

"And the other two?"

"I'll let you know."

The corner of his mouth moved.

"Thirty days are up," he said.

"I know how long thirty days is."

He bit down on a laugh.

The kids went to Jack's guesthouse for the night, and I walked up the bakery stairs at nine o'clock with a bottle of wine I hadn't opened.

The flat smelled of yeast and the old paint of my easel.

Nothing had been moved.

The bed was unmade and my mug was on the sill.

I stood in the doorway of my own kitchen and heard footsteps on the stair.
