Chapter 10: Arrows in the Dark

Jinghan felt the arrow hit before it landed.

That was the strangest part.

Luo's fear went through him, and his body threw itself sideways without asking him.

Luo's body went the opposite way, and the arrow punched into his left shoulder instead of his heart.

Jinghan felt it go in.

He was naked on a quilt, a hand's breadth from the shutters, and a white-hot nail had been driven through his own chest.

He screamed.

So did Luo.

"Down!" Jinghan managed, and dragged Luo off the bed by the braid.

The second arrow went into the pillow.

The third went into the wall, and the shutters tore off their hinges.

Four black shapes came through the window with short curved swords.

Jinghan did not have his sword.

It was on the table across the room.

Luo seized the bed frame by its newly mended post and tore it off whole.

He swung it into the first man's chest.

Jinghan was quite impressed.

"The sword!" Luo shouted.

Jinghan dove across the floor, rolled, and came up with Winter Reed in his hand.

He blocked a curved blade a hair's breadth from his throat.

He was wearing nothing but a glowing lotus, and he didn't care.

The assassin was fast, silent and skilled, but he did not have a shared heart.

Jinghan could feel Luo behind him.

He felt the slow, ugly pull of the arrow in Luo's shoulder and the exact set of Luo's weight on his good leg.

He knew without turning that Luo had his back.
