Chapter 11: Tang Yu Is Taken
Tang Yu was gone by sunrise.
The Cloudpeak disciples found his cot empty and his sandals set neatly by the door.
A red paper was folded on the pillow where he had slept.
Jinghan read it standing in the camp with the dawn mist still on the grass.
Come to the Hall of the Scarlet Lotus by noon, Sword Immortal.
Bring the Ember Demon. Bring no sword.
If you are late, the boy pays for it.
Jinghan did not remember crossing the camp.
He only remembered the sound his teeth made.
"Jinghan." Luo's hand closed around his wrist. "Breathe."
"He's twenty years old."
"I know."
"He still sleeps with a candle."
"I know. I'm going with you."
"You can barely lift your arm."
"I can lift enough," said Luo. "It's my hall."
They rode up Redcliff at a gallop.
The road wound red and steep through the pines, and Jinghan felt Luo's shoulder with every stride, the grind of the torn muscle.
Luo felt the cold fury in Jinghan's gut, and neither of them said a word.
Scarlet Lotus Hall stood at the top.
It was a long, high pavilion of red lacquer with a roof like a flame.
Three hundred disciples knelt in rows on the courtyard stones, and none of them could look anyone in the eye.
Hua Boyan sat on the master's chair, which he had dragged onto the dais, with his jade rings on both thumbs.
Tang Yu knelt at the bottom of the steps with a gag in his mouth and a bruise on his cheek.
"Ah," said Hua. "The lovers."
"Let him go," Jinghan said.
"I said no sword."
"I left it at the gate." Jinghan held up both empty hands. "Let him go, Elder Hua."
"Master Luo," Hua said pleasantly, ignoring him. "I find the Lotus is better served by a man with a steadier hand."
"Kneel on the stones, give me the seat, and your pretty friend can take his student home."
Luo walked up the aisle between the kneeling rows.
