Chapter 3: The Master's Summons

Pei Zhongyi arrives at the Gate and orders Jinghan to leave Luo Yanchen; Jinghan refuses in front of both sects, and that night Luo goes to his knees for him.

Pei Zhongyi arrived at noon, looking perfectly well.

Jinghan noticed that first, standing on the broken steps of the Weeping Gate with Luo a half step behind his shoulder.

Pei came up the mountain road in white robes edged with gold.

Twelve Cloudpeak elders walked behind him, and two hundred disciples fanned out below.

Three hundred Scarlet Lotus disciples already stood on the far bank of the pool, in red.

Nobody on either side had drawn a sword.

Everyone was looking at the two men on the steps, because everyone had heard.

"Jinghan," Pei said, and his voice was warm and sad, the voice Jinghan had obeyed for twenty years. "My dear boy."

"Master."

"You look pale."

"I was told you were ill."

"I recovered." Pei smiled, and it did not reach his eyes. "I see the seal did not."

He looked at Luo then, just once, the way a man looks at a spot on his robe.

"Master Luo. You will give up my disciple and come with us in chains. Cloudpeak will deal with the thing in your chest."

"No," said Luo.

"I wasn't asking."

"I know," Luo said pleasantly. "That's why I said no."

A murmur ran along the red bank, and then a laugh.

Pei kept his smile and turned back to Jinghan, very gently.

"Dual cultivation is a path for the weak and the corrupt. You have served Cloudpeak with honor since you were eight years old. Come home."

"I will find another way to quiet it, in the Frost Cell, with a proper formation."

Jinghan heard the offer under the words.

Pei was not asking him to give up a man.

He was asking Jinghan to give up the only warm thing he had known in years, and to call it virtue.

"Master," Jinghan said. "Will your formation hold at moonrise?"

"It will."

"Will you stake my life on it?"

Pei did not answer quickly enough.

"Then I'll tell you what moonrise felt like," Jinghan said, loud enough for the back rows to hear.

"It felt like being wrung out like a rag. The warden says it will kill us both by dawn if we're not joined."

"The warden is an old woman."

"The warden has kept this Gate for forty years. Which of us has?"

Somebody coughed.

"If you want me in the Frost Cell, come and take me at dusk," Jinghan said. "If your formation holds, I'll bow to you."

"And if it doesn't?"

"Then you'll have my body to explain."

The silence was very complete.

Pei's face went smooth.

"You are still my disciple," he said.

"Yes."

"And you choose this."

"I'm the one the demon chose," Jinghan said. "Ask it if I'm free to leave."

Pei looked at him for a long time.

"Ten days," he said softly. "Come home in ten days, Jinghan, with your head cleared."

"Or Cloudpeak will have no use for a sword that kneels to a demon."

He turned his back and led his two hundred down the road.

Jinghan stood in the sun with his knees shaking, and Luo's hand settled lightly in the small of his back.

"That," Luo said, very low, "was the finest speech I have ever heard a righteous man give."

"I was terrified."

"I know. I could feel it."

Jinghan could feel Luo too.

Luo's pride was warm in his chest, and under it was something fiercer that made his pulse jump.

"Come inside," Luo said, "and let me thank you properly."

The sun was still up.

The door was still open, and the warden's dry cough came from the garden.

They went in anyway.

Luo shut the door and put his back against it, and for a moment neither of them spoke.

"Take your clothes off," Jinghan said, because somebody had to be brave.

Luo shook his head.

"You first."

Jinghan undressed in the middle of the room, in daylight, with Luo's eyes on every inch of him.

By the time his trousers were off he was hard and flushed to the chest.

"Fuck," Luo said quietly. "Look at you."

He crossed the floor and knelt.

Not on the bed, but on the bare stone in front of Jinghan, his hands closing on Jinghan's hips.

"What are you doing?" Jinghan's voice came out very high.

"I wanted this all night," Luo said. "I just don't know how."

"Then ask me."

"Tell me."

Jinghan looked down at the Ember Demon on his knees, braid over one shoulder, brown eyes lifted to his.

Something in his chest turned over.

"Use your tongue," he said. "Start slow. And don't stop when I ask you to."

Luo licked a long wet line up the underside of Jinghan's cock.

Jinghan grabbed the nearest thing, which was Luo's hair.

"Like that?"

"Yes. Again. Now the head."

Luo did it, and then he took Jinghan into his mouth, and the heat and wet of it took the air out of Jinghan's lungs.

Luo was clumsy.

He took too much too fast and choked, and pulled back and wiped his mouth.

Then he came back, grim and determined.

Jinghan gasped his name and held the braid, rocking his hips in shallow thrusts.

With every inch Luo took, Luo's own pleasure hummed back through the shared pulse.

Luo was enjoying it.

He was so hard from doing it that his cock stood thick and dark against his stomach.

"You like this," Jinghan said, amazed.

Luo hummed his answer around him, and Jinghan's knees nearly went.

"Faster," Jinghan said. "Use your hand at the base. Yes. Yanchen..."

The name came out of him without his choosing it.

Luo went still, and then he looked up with his mouth stretched around Jinghan's cock, and his eyes went black.

"Say it again."

"Yanchen." Jinghan's thighs were shaking. "You're doing so well. Don't stop, please, I'm going to..."

Luo swallowed him down to the root, and Jinghan came with a cry, both hands locked in the braid.

He spilled into the heat of Luo's throat, and Luo took every drop.

Jinghan sagged against the wall.

Luo rose, wiping his mouth with the back of his wrist, looking pleased with himself and a little stunned.

"Well?" he said.

"You're the worst student I've ever had."

"I'll improve."

"You'd better," Jinghan said.

He dragged Luo down by the neck and kissed him, tasting himself on Luo's tongue, and Luo's whole body shuddered against his.

Luo was still hard, and Jinghan meant to do something about it.

The red lotus on Jinghan's chest pulsed warm, and a third ring of petals slid out.

Then someone struck the warden's bell outside, three hard times.

"A banner," Su Ning called through the door. "Scarlet Lotus red, crossing the Gate."

Luo lifted his head.

"That," he said, "is Hua Boyan's banner."

"Who is Hua Boyan?"

Luo's face went flat and cold, and Jinghan had never seen that look on him before.

"My senior elder," said Luo. "And he has come to take my seat."
