Chapter 15: The Press Lunch

The Preservation Society hall had a chandelier, sixty folding chairs, and a podium with a microphone on it.

By five to twelve every chair held a reporter, a trustee, or a woman from the garden club who had come for the sandwiches.

Margaret stood at the podium in her pearls with a card in her hand and Preston at her shoulder.

He had a fresh haircut and a face the color of paper.

Nathaniel and I took the two seats in the front row that she had left empty.

She had left them empty so we could be looked at.

"Thank you all for coming," Margaret said. "This is a difficult morning for our family. I want to speak plainly, because our family has always believed in honesty."

Jo, at the back by the sound table, gave me a thumbs-up.

She had found the cable for the hall speakers in under a minute.

"My brother-in-law has been a private man," Margaret went on, in the voice of a woman reading a eulogy. "Too private. Years ago he formed a bond with a young woman, and he has been quietly supporting her ever since. She is carrying his child."

A murmur went through the chairs.

A reporter in the second row lifted her phone.

"His marriage to Claire Danner on the fourteenth was, I believe, a kindness to that child, and to the girl. Claire is a dear girl from a good, simple family. I don't blame her for being confused."

I kept my hands in my lap.

I did not look at Nathaniel, though I could feel him beside me, not moving at all.

"I ask only that you let this family heal in private," Margaret said. "And I would like to introduce Miss Tiffany Lund, who has asked to say a few words."
