Chapter 17: Route 9
Elin's POV
Dominic came through Rhonda's front door with a laptop under his arm and his face wiped of everything.
"She has the tape," he said.
Mina looked up from the kitchen table, where she was holding her mother's unopened letter in both hands.
"What tape?" I asked.
"Your father's, from the hospital." He set the laptop on the table. "I heard the part meant for me. When it turned to you, I walked out."
I stared at him.
"You walked out."
"It wasn't mine to hear."
"And the rest?"
"I copied the whole tape onto this while it played. She took the original, and she never looked at the laptop."
I put my hand flat on the laptop lid.
My father's voice was in there, and I did not want to open it with Rhonda's kettle still ticking on the stove.
My phone rang.
It was Odile. "Child, I sent my driver after that woman's car when she left my house," she said. "She's on Route 9. She's heading for the river bridge."
"Route 9," I said.
Dominic's whole body went still.
"I'll drive," he said.
"You don't have to," I said.
"Yes, I do."
I told Mina to lock the door behind us and not to open it for anyone, and she nodded and hugged the letter to her chest.
We took his car.
The road ran along the river, wet and bare, and for ten minutes neither of us spoke.
Then I saw the traffic light ahead, hanging over a crossroads, and I knew without being told.
It was green.
He slowed anyway.
His knuckles were so white I could see the bones.
