Chapter 18: Odile's Counter
By nine the next morning, the photo was on every phone in Hartford.
Reporters stood three deep outside the Haldane Freight tower.
Dominic could not enter the building, so Odile marched in alone with her cane and a retired bank examiner in reading glasses, and I followed with Mina at my elbow.
The guard stepped aside for Odile again.
The board was already seated.
The chairman rose with a tablet in his hand.
"In light of this morning's photograph," he said, "the board moves to remove Mr. Haldane permanently, effective today."
"Seconded," said the silver beard.
"Sit down," said Odile.
He sat.
She walked to the head of the table and put her cane across it like a gavel.
"I said seven days. It has been two. You called a vote on an audit that has not been done, on a ledger that has not been checked, because a photographer was waiting under a bridge."
"Madam, the photograph speaks..."
"Then let us ask the man who took it."
The doors opened, and the driver came in with a slight man in a green jacket who held his camera in both hands.
The photographer's face was grey.
"Tell them," Odile said.
"I was paid five hundred dollars cash," the man said. "A woman texted me at six yesterday morning and told me where to stand and when."
He held out his phone.
The chairman took it and read the message.
Be under the bridge at nine. Two cars. You will know which. C.
"Whose number is that?" the chairman asked.
"Rhonda Marden's," said Odile. "I have it in my own phone."
She turned to the woman in reading glasses.
