Chapter 24: Sweet Dreams

We went down in Dominic's shirt and my coat, because neither of us had thought to bring anything else.

Mina sat at the kitchen table with her mother's letter flat in front of her.

The seal was unbroken.

Her eyes were swollen, and she looked up guiltily.

"I couldn't do it alone," she said. "I wanted to wait for you."

I pulled out the chair beside her, and Dominic took the one across.

"Read it to us," I said. "Or read it to yourself. We'll sit."

Mina slid her thumbnail under the flap.

The page inside was a single sheet, and her mother's handwriting ran small and crooked down it.

Mina read it in a whisper.

"Mina, my girl. If you are reading this, I am gone, and you have found a family or you have not. I hope you have. Your father sang to you every Sunday. I don't have a voice, so I never could. Ask the other girl to sing it with you. She never knew about us, and I think she would have loved you from the first day. Be kind to her. Love, Mama."

She lowered the page.

No one said anything for a while.

"She wanted this," Mina said. "She wanted you."

"I want you," I said. "I always did. I just didn't know there was a you to want."

She laughed and wiped her face with the cuff of her cardigan.

I put the kettle on.

It was the first time I had done it in that kitchen without feeling that someone was watching.

The old stove ticked, and the water began to tick back.
