Heath's POV

I found Tucker on Sunday night in the lower level of his father's parking garage, sitting on the hood of his own car with a bottle of bourbon.

Dex had told me where.

I parked across the aisle and shut off the engine and sat for a moment with my hands on the wheel.

Addie was at her grandmother's.

She'd said she needed to tell Bev about the phone before she did anything, and I'd let her go, and I had told myself the whole drive that I only wanted to look at him.

I got out.

"Corbin." Tucker lifted the bottle. "You came to gloat. Go ahead."

"I came with one question."

"I'm listening."

"Why did you ask her for the phone?"

He didn't answer right away.

He looked at me, and then he smiled, and I knew that smile.

I'd shared an apartment with it on Halsted Street for two years.

"What phone?"

"Her old one. The one you've kept in your nightstand for eight years."

"It's sentimental." He tipped the bottle. "She was crying so hard that summer. I wanted to keep something of hers."

"I called that phone for six months."

"Did you?"

"Every day."

"Sad." He rubbed his chin. "You must have been very lonely."

I took one step closer.
