Chapter 22: Union Station
On Friday at nine, a crew in orange vests stood on a lift outside the Maddox Homes building with a drill.
The sign above the glass doors had read MADDOX & SON HOMES for thirty-one years.
Two hundred employees had come out onto the sidewalk to watch.
Tucker's father stood at the curb in a dark overcoat, with his wife beside him, her gloved hand through his arm.
He saw Heath and me come up the pavement, and he took one step away from the crowd to meet us.
"Mrs. Corbin."
"Mr. Maddox."
He studied me for a moment.
"I've known my son was a liar since he was nine," he said. "He broke a neighbor's window and blamed the dog. I called it ambition. I let it pay his bills."
"I'm not here to hear you apologize for him."
"I'm not apologizing for him." His jaw worked. "I'm telling you why I asked you here. I wanted you to see that I mean it."
He raised one hand.
The man on the lift put his drill to the first bolt.
The ampersand came loose and swung down in a long arc to the hands of a worker below.
Then the word SON came off, one letter at a time, with a screech of metal that went through the crowd.
Nobody spoke.
An older woman near the front, a bookkeeper by her badge, covered her mouth.
When the last letter was down, the sign said MADDOX HOMES, and I realized it looked cleaner.
"Thank you for coming," Tucker's father said.
"Where is he?"
"Gone. He left me a note and the keys to the condo. I don't know where." His wife's fingers tightened on his sleeve. "I won't look."
