Chapter 23: The Garden

Bev's garden held thirty folding chairs and a table of lemon cake.

It was a Saturday in October, with the tomato plants cut back and the last roses gone brown at the edges.

Dex had strung lights along the fence.

Heath's mother sat in the front row in her ink-colored cardigan, holding a handkerchief she hadn't needed yet.

The neighbors had come, and the woman with the stroller, and the man with the coffee.

Bev walked me down the grass between the chairs, in her navy dress, with the silver wren pinned on her collar.

"You look like my mother in 1971," she said.

"You said that the last time."

"It was true the last time." She patted my arm. "Be less terrified."

"I'm not."

"Good. Neither is he."

Heath stood under the pear tree in a plain grey suit.

He watched me come the whole way, and his face did what it had done at the altar in the Lakeshore.

It gave up on being careful.

Dex, who had agreed to officiate after a short and shaky course online, cleared his throat.

"I was told to keep this short," he said. "Addie goes first."

I had written my vows in the car on the back of a spelling quiz.

I held the paper and found I didn't need it.

"Heath. The first time I married you, I did it to win something." My voice held. "The second time I'm doing it because I'd lose everything if I didn't."
