Chapter 7: The Rehearsal

Mallory was waiting by the ballroom doors on Friday evening, holding a small velvet box.

She wore the blue dress I'd helped her pick for my wedding.

She was thinner than she'd been a week ago, and her eyes were pink.

"Addie," she said. "Please. Five minutes."

I had a rehearsal in the room behind her.

Bev, Dex and a florist were walking a runner of white petals down the aisle.

Heath stood a few steps off with his phone to his ear.

He had barely spoken to me since the kitchen.

I had said, "Of course you'd say that now," and he had said, "Yes. I would," and gone to bed.

"Five minutes," I told Mallory. "Over there."

We stood by the window in the corridor.

"I came to give you this." She opened the box.

Bev's brooch lay inside, a silver wren with one chip of garnet for an eye.

My grandmother had given it to me to carry at the wedding.

I'd handed it to Mallory in March, because she was the one who never lost things.

"You've had it for months," I said.

"I know. I kept it safe." Her voice caught. "Addie, I need you to hear me. It wasn't what you think. Tucker has been so controlling. He told me he'd get my brother fired if I said no to the game. I was scared."

I looked at her.

Her tears were real. That was the awful part. Her tears had always been real.

"He told you to hold his hand?"
