Two hundred people watched me marry Declan McMahon that afternoon.
By midnight I was alone with him in the honeymoon suite, still in my wedding dress.
He was pouring whiskey and grinning, and he said, "Let's play a game."
I laughed. I was married and happy, and nothing about him that day had warned me.
"Truth swap," he said. "Deepest, darkest secret. You tell one, I tell one, and nobody gets mad."
"You first," I said, because I wanted something silly.
He sat on the edge of the bed and swirled the glass.
"I slept with Tierney."
He said it easily, with his eyes on my face.
"Three weeks before the wedding. At my place. I started it myself, so don't blame her."
I put my glass on the nightstand, because my hand would not hold it.
Tierney Whitaker had been my best friend since we were nineteen.
She had zipped me into this dress that morning.
She had cried through her toast, in front of all two hundred guests.
At six a.m. she had texted me: Breathe. He's perfect for you. Nothing will go wrong today.
I looked at Declan, and he looked back, and he was still smiling.
"Your turn, Miriam," he said.
His voice was light, but his eyes were not.
I thought about the door.
I thought about slapping him, and about the ring on my finger that I had put on that afternoon.
Then I thought: he asked for my darkest thing, and I have one.
"I killed someone once," I said.
The smile left his face.
"I was nineteen," I said. "Tierney and I worked at a bar in Madison called the Tin Roof."
"The manager was a man named Darren Bristow. He grabbed me by the hair and dragged me out to the back lot."
"Tierney's tire iron was in her trunk. I got it out and swung it once."
"He dropped. Tierney knelt next to him, checked him by herself, and told me he was gone."
"She sent me to the car. I never looked back at him, not once."
"She told me she would handle it. I have never asked her about it again."
My voice shook only at the end.
"That's ten years, Declan. I never told you because I thought you would leave."
He did not look shocked.
He set his glass down very slowly and said, "I know."
The room went cold.
"Tierney told me," he said. "Three weeks ago, in my kitchen."
"I'd found you crying in the florist's cooler, and you wouldn't tell me why. So I called her."
"She said you'd killed a man in Madison and she had been protecting you ever since."
"I wasn't ready to hear it. I got angry that you'd never trusted me with it, and she was right there."
"So I kissed her. I started it. That part is on me."
I stood up so fast the chair fell over.
"You knew," I said. "You knew when you said your vows."
"Yes."
"You stood in front of two hundred people and promised me everything, and you knew."
"I wanted you to say it yourself," he said. "I wanted one thing from you that I didn't have to hear from someone else."
"And you did that with a game?"
"I did it badly," he said. "I know."
I picked up the whiskey he had poured for me and threw it at the wall above his head.
The glass broke against the headboard, and amber ran down the white padding.
He did not duck. He did not even blink.
I went to the window and looked down at the lake. The glass showed me his reflection behind mine.
I had a husband who had cheated on me with my best friend.
I had a best friend who had told him my worst day before I could.
And I had a man in a tuxedo who was not leaving the room.
Everything I owned, every friend, every secret, had just gone through Tierney's hands first.
I could leave. I had my own shop, my own keys and my own money in the morning.
But Tierney knew the one thing that could put me in prison, and I had just learned she was willing to use it in a bed.
If I walked out tonight, I would never find out how much she had said, or to whom.
So I did not leave.
I turned around, took off my ring, and put it on the table between us.
"Sit down," I said. "You're going to tell me every word she said to you. Then I'll decide what's left of this marriage."
Declan sat.
My phone lit up on the nightstand.
It was Tierney.
He told you, didn't he? Don't do anything rash, Miri. I have kept Madison safe for ten years. I'll keep it safe tonight too.
