Chapter 24: The Cottage
Soren read the chair's message to the end, and then he read it again.
"She moved it herself," he said. "She stood up in front of the board and moved it."
"After the whistle."
"After she saw Astrid's face."
"Don't thank her yet," I said. "She still threatened you in her own parlor."
"I won't."
He went home at ten, and he kissed nothing but the top of Wren's head on his way out.
I did not sleep much.
On Friday the woman in the green cardigan, from the museum where Soren had asked about the camp, telephoned his cell, and he put it on speaker in my kitchen.
"Mr. Lund, I'm sorry to ring so early," she said. "The cottage on Little Sable Lake sold in the spring. The new owners were clearing the pantry, and they found a tin biscuit box behind the flour bin. It has Camp Tamarack stamped on the lid. They brought it to us because they didn't know what to do with it."
"What's in it?"
"Notebooks. A few letters. I haven't opened it. I thought, in view of your inquiry, that you might want to be present."
We drove up on Saturday morning in Elin's old station wagon, with Wren asleep in the back and a thermos of coffee between us.
Elin stayed home and said she would hold the fort.
She said it grimly.
The cottage stood at the end of a gravel road above the lake.
It was small and white, with a green tin roof and a screen porch, and a dock below it that ran out into the water.
I stopped at the top of the lawn, with Wren in the carrier on my chest.
I looked at the dock for a long time.
It was a newer dock.
The old one must have rotted away years ago.
