Chapter 4: The Lawyer

On Tuesday I signed my name with my right hand, which looked like a child's.

The lawyer's office was above a bakery on Superior Street, and the whole stairwell smelled of cardamom.

She was a friend of Elin's from college, a small woman with silver earrings and a pen she clicked while she thought.

She had told me on the phone she would not charge until I could hold a bow again.

"Irreconcilable differences," she said. "Hennepin County, because that's where you lived. Minnesota doesn't care who's at fault, so I'm only going to ask what you want."

"I want out."

"That's not a want. That's a direction."

She clicked the pen.

"Property. You have no prenup, so half of everything he earned during the marriage is yours. That's the house, the accounts, his shares in the family firm."

"I don't want his firm."

"You may not want it, but you're entitled to it."

"I want my cello, my clothes, and the money from my own account," I said. "Then I want nothing with the Lund name on it."

She looked at me for a moment over her glasses.

"That is the most generous opening position I've heard in nine years of practice."

"I'm tired."

"You're hurt," she said. "Those can look alike, but they'll cost you different amounts."

"Put down what I said. If I change my mind, I'll tell you."

She wrote it down.

Then she turned the page and asked the question I'd been waiting for.
