Chapter 6: The Cabin

My lawyer called before I'd finished the bun.

"I figured out how they saw it," she said. "Soren's attorneys registered for notices on your name on Sunday, and I filed the summons at nine this morning. The county emailed them a copy before you signed the rest."

"On Sunday?"

"The day after the fire."

I put the bun down.

"So he hired lawyers before he even knew where I was," I said.

"I'd say he hired them before he reached the hospital."

I thanked her and hung up.

Then I sat there with my cast on the counter and understood that three days ago I had been a wife, and today I was a case number.

Elin stood up and put her coat on.

"We're not staying in my apartment," she said. "He knows I live here. Margit knows. If the investigator can find a bakery, he can find a doorbell."

"Where else is there?"

"I called Dr. Koski."

"Elin."

"Don't Elin me. He gave me his cell number when you were in surgery."

It was a long, dry text exchange, as Elin described it.

He had written, "My grandmother's house in Grand Marais has been empty since March. It has a stove, a bed, and a very loud furnace. I can't drive you there, but my sister lives on the next lot and will leave you soup."

I did not want to take it.

I wanted to be a woman who had a plan.

But my hand throbbed with every breath, and a man I'd once trusted to hold my coat had sent investigators after me.
