Chapter 24: The Acorns
I propped myself up on his chest.
"Ask me what?"
He sighed.
"She wants a job."
I stared at him.
"A job."
"At Little Acorns. She can't go back to that school. Every teacher in the lounge came to the shower." He rubbed his face. "She wants your four-year-olds. Getting them ready for kindergarten. She said I had to ask first, so it wouldn't be weird if you said no."
"Lyle."
"I told her it was weird either way."
I put my forehead down on his chest and laughed until the bed shook.
"Is that a no?" he said into my hair.
"Tell her she starts after Labor Day."
"She's going to cry."
"That's all she told me to ask," he said.
He said it a little carefully.
I didn't notice until much later.
A year went by.
On April ninth, one year to the day from the night Ron posted his screenshot, I unlocked the green door of Little Acorns at six forty-five in the morning.
The key still had its masking tape that said FRONT.
