Chapter 16: Her Father's Chair

The boardroom of Pemberton Marine sat on the forty-first floor, with a table that sat sixteen and a window that looked down on the terminal.

I had been in that room once, at nineteen, to get a photo taken with my grandmother.

On Monday at nine I walked in on Lachlan's arm in a grey suit, and all nine directors were already seated.

My father sat at the head of the table in the tall leather chair.

He had not shaved.

"Sit down, Mina," he said, in a voice with no air in it. "This is a private meeting."

"It's my meeting."

"Your lawyer sent a letter. We'll review it."

Gran's lawyer, at my elbow, laid a folder on the table.

"There is nothing to review, Leopold," he said. "The shares are registered. She votes them."

I didn't sit.

I stood at the foot of the table and looked down the length of it at the man who had taught me to ride a bike.

"I'm moving a resolution," I said. "That Leopold Pemberton be removed as chief executive officer, effective now. I vote fifty-one percent in favor."

Silence.

One of the directors, a heavy man who had golfed with my father for thirty years, cleared his throat and didn't look up.
