Chapter 19: Ice and Rain
Brown water slid over the spillway crest in a smooth, heavy sheet.
Not the white falls anymore.
A wall of it, moving all at once.
I put my light on the gauge painted on the dam face. It was going under while I watched.
"How long?" I said.
"Till it's over the walls and into the low end of Main?" Nolan wiped rain off his face. "Three hours. Maybe four."
"Then we've got three hours."
I got my phone out under my coat and called the first selectman.
He answered on the first ring. He hadn't been sleeping either.
"Evacuate Main Street," I said. "Now. Everybody from the bridge to the school. Send them to the firehouse on Maple."
"Meredith, Spaulding's lawyers..."
"Can sue you in a dry town. Ring the siren."
A long breath on the line.
Then, two minutes later, the fire siren went off over Alder Falls.
It wailed up the valley and bounced off the hills, and lights came on all over the town below us.
I called Opal next.
