Chapter 14: What Lacey Brought

I did not pick it up.

I stood in the aisle with the envelope against my hip and looked down at the woman who had called my daughter a napper.

"Not in here," Lacey said, still not looking at me. "Stairwell, end of the hall. Two minutes."

She stood and walked out ahead of me, her heels loud on the tile.

"Theresa," Gabe said, very quietly.

"I know."

"I'm coming."

"I know that too."

My lawyer took one look at the envelope and held up a hand.

"Don't promise her anything," she said. "Don't sign anything. Listen."

The stairwell door was heavy and gray.

Lacey stood on the landing with her sunglasses pushed up into her hair.

Without the blowout and the linen she looked her age, and tired.

Gabe stopped on the step below the door and folded his arms.

"You brought him," Lacey said.

"I brought him."
