We buried Tilly on Tuesday morning, before the day got hot.
The chapel was small and white, with a plain wooden door and no stained glass.
I had picked it because the windows opened, and because nobody in it knew my husband.
The casket was the size I will not describe.
It was white, with a spray of yellow daisies on the lid, because the dress had daisies on it.
Gabe had sat with me the night before and helped me choose a song.
We had chosen the one about the counting, the one she hummed in the bath.
By nine o'clock the pews were full.
The women from Desert Line sat together in the back, all eleven, in their good black dresses.
My boss had closed the dispatch office for the morning, and had put a hand-lettered sign on the door.
Tilly's daycare teachers came, and the girl who shared her cubby, with her mother's hand around her shoulders.
