Chapter 19: The Bank Dinner
The man in the gray polo called me on Monday morning.
"I stood in the back of that hall on Saturday to collect my wife," he said. "I sit on the board of Saguaro Trust."
"I know. Gabe saw your plate."
"The chair of our board is a hard woman to get on a phone. She picked up in two rings."
"What did she say?"
"She said, Bring his wife."
He paused.
"Our annual dinner is Thursday at seven. Brodie Dalton is receiving the Vice President of the Year. He asked that it not be postponed."
"Nine days after he buried his daughter?"
"He said she would have wanted him to carry on," the man said.
I did not say anything for a moment.
"Wear something you can stand up in," he said.
On Thursday, I stood in the doorway of a hotel ballroom in a green dress, with the 1:20 photo folded in my clutch.
There were forty round tables and a chandelier the size of a car.
A screen over the stage said Saguaro Trust Annual Awards in white letters.
The hostess found my name on her list and went pale.
