Chapter 18: Costly
On Tuesday at 7:30 in the morning, Julius was sitting on my porch steps with two coffees and a laminated card.
The card was Ellery's work.
I knew because it had glitter on it.
JULIUS'S JOBS, it said, in crayon. 1. School. 2. Dinner. 3. Do what Mom says. 4. Do not be late.
"She gave it to me last night through the mail slot," he said. "With a stamp."
"She mailed you a card from inside my house."
"I'm told it's her method."
Ellery came out of the front door at a run, backpack bouncing, and stopped at the top step.
She looked at him.
She looked at the coffees.
"You're on time," she said, with deep suspicion.
"I was here at six forty."
"That's early. Early counts."
"Good to know."
She took his hand and walked him down the steps to the car.
I drove, because it was my car, and he sat in the back beside her booster seat, listening to a long report on the lunch menu.
