Chapter 15: Whose Name on the Lease

Maxine's POV

I parked my father's Harley under the clubhouse sign and cut the engine.

Kayla stood in the lot under the floodlight with a pink suitcase at her feet.

She was in the same borrowed leather jacket, and her mascara had run to her chin.

Cade's black sedan sat behind her with the headlights on and the driver's door hanging open.

Eight or nine brothers had come out onto the porch.

Nobody had gone down the steps.

"Baby," Cade said to her. "Baby, get in the car."

"Don't call me that."

"You've got nowhere to go."

"I know I don't." She laughed, thin and wet. "The landlord changed my locks at midnight. A man from Boone's company called to say the lease was ended. Everything I own is in that bag."

I walked down into the light.

Both of them looked at me.

"Maxine," Cade said. "This isn't your business."

"It's my lot."

"She's carrying my child."

"Then take her to your house."

His face tightened.

"You know I can't. You froze the accounts."

"I froze nothing. The club did, when it took your patch." I kept my voice level. "The house is in both our names, and I haven't decided what to do with it."

"Then let me stay there."

"With her?"

"With her." He swallowed. "Until I sort this out."

Kayla turned her head.

"Sort what out?" she said.

"Kay."

"Sort what out, Cade? I'm standing here in the dark with a suitcase."

"I'm figuring out where we go."

"Where we go." She stepped toward him. "Were you ever going to marry me?"

He opened his mouth and nothing came.

"Say it," she said. "Right now. These men are listening, and I want them to hear."
