Chapter 19: The Transfer
Clayton called on Wednesday at six in the morning.
"He asked me to ask you to come to the yard," he said. "You can say no."
"What does he want?"
"He won't tell me. He's been in the trailer since four with a lawyer."
I stood in my kitchen with a cracker in my hand, the only thing I could keep down before nine.
"I'll come," I said. "Not for him."
"I know."
The yard on Fulton Road was gray and wet.
Clayton met me at the gate, took my coat sleeve for a second to steer me around a puddle, and let go.
The trailer door was open.
Jared sat behind the green folder at the end of the desk, and a man in a cheap suit sat beside him with a briefcase on his knee.
On the desk lay a stack of papers and a cashier's check, face up.
He stood when I came in.
"Thank you for coming," he said.
"I have forty minutes before I open."
"This won't take forty."
He pushed the papers across to Clayton's side of the desk.
"That's the transfer of my half of Vaughn & Quade," he said. "All of it. The trucks, the yard, the name."
Clayton didn't pick it up.
"Jared."
"You paid sixty thousand to keep this place alive while I was at the lake lot. I looked at the figures last night. I owe you more than I thought. The Linden Court work order, all forty-one thousand of it, was billed to the company."
"I know what it was billed to."
"So I'm giving you my share, and you take the debt off it. It's less than the share is worth. I know that, and I want it that way."
