Chapter 13: One Week

Neil brought me coffee in bed on Monday morning.

He had never done that in eight years.

He set the cup on my nightstand, sat on the edge of the mattress and smiled his easy smile.

"You've been working so hard," he said. "I thought we should go away for a weekend. Just us."

"After the party," I said.

"Sure. After the party."

His thumb rubbed the back of my hand.

"Who's coming to this thing, anyway? Show me the list. I want to help."

"No."

"No?"

"It's your surprise, Neil. You don't get to see the list."

He laughed, but he kept watching my face.

"Kristen says you were cold to her at pickup."

"Ian Maddox made a scene. I didn't."

"And Shannon's being strange. Has she said anything to you?"

"She cried on my porch about money," I said. "That's all."

It was close enough to true that my voice didn't shake.

He kissed my forehead and went to shower.

I drank the coffee, because it would have been odd not to, and I thought about how many mornings he had spent being sweet to me while he planned a weekend with her.

At nine I called Delaware.

Neil's mother answered on the second ring.

"He never calls unless he wants something," she said. "So it must be you."

"It's his birthday party, this Saturday at seven. I'd love for you to come."

"I'll be there."

"Could you come early? Around six. I need a hand in the kitchen."
