Chapter 11: His Assistant

I gave Dean the pages on Saturday at two o'clock, in Faye's living room, with Faye in the next chair.

I had marked them with yellow tabs.

He took them from me and sat down on the edge of the armchair.

I watched him read.

He read the police liaison's note first, and his lips moved slightly on the word assistant.

He went back and read it again.

Then he turned to the second tab, the handwritten one, and I saw the exact moment he got to it.

His whole face went slack.

He read the line a third time.

"Dean, wait," he said aloud. His voice cracked in the middle. "Dean, wait."

"Yes."

"You were saying that."

"For hours, apparently."

"I wasn't there."

"No."

He put the pages down on his knee and pressed both palms against his eyes. His shoulders began to shake.

I let him.

I had expected to feel satisfied.

I felt tired, and sorry, and angry, all at once.

None of those feelings left room for anything else.

After a while he lowered his hands.

"The assistant," he said. "That was her."

"Who else?"

"I don't have an assistant."

"I know."

"She told me it was a survey. She sat in a conference room and cried and said she'd hung up on a survey." He laughed, and it was an ugly sound. "I handed her a tissue."

"Call her," I said.

He looked up.

"Call her on speaker. Right now. In front of me."

"She'll think it's a trap."

"It is."

Dean stared at the phone in his hand.

Then he dialed.

It rang four times.

"Dean!" Brynn's voice came out of the speaker, warm and breathless. "Oh, hi. I'm so glad you called. I was just thinking about you. Is everything okay? Did you read the thing I sent about the bonus?"
