Chapter 15: The Driver

The meeting was in a plain room at the Fort Collins police station, with a long table and a box of tissues in the middle.

I sat on one side with my cane hooked over the chair.

Faye sat on my left, and the detective sat on my right with his notebook closed.

Dean waited in the hallway.

I had told him he could come as far as the building and no farther, and he had nodded and taken a seat by the water fountain.

The door opened at ten.

The man who came in was bigger than I expected, and he walked slowly with his head down.

He was about fifty, with gray in his beard and tar-stained work boots. A young public defender followed him in.

He saw my cane and stopped.

"This is Ms. Lamont," the detective said. "Ms. Lamont, this is the man who came in on Saturday."

"Sit down," I said.

He sat. His hands were shaking, and he laid them flat on the table to hide it.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I'm so sorry. I don't know how to start."

"Start with the road."

He swallowed.

"I run a roofing crew. I was driving to a job in Wellington, and I was late. I had my phone on the seat, and a client was calling about the schedule."

"You looked down."

"I looked down," he said. "I looked up, and there was a woman on a bike in front of me, and I couldn't stop."

Faye's hand tightened on the table.

"I felt it hit," he said. "I pulled over. I got out. You were in the ditch, and you weren't moving."

"And?"

"I could see you were breathing. I thought, I'll call. I took my phone out." His voice thinned. "My license was suspended. I'd had a DUI two years ago. I've got three guys on my crew with kids, and I knew if I stayed, I'd lose the company."
