Chapter 6: The Lobby

Dean's office was a glass building on the north side of town with a lobby two stories tall.

I came through the revolving door on Friday at ten past noon, on crutches, with Faye behind me carrying a manila envelope.

It was lunch hour. The lobby was full of people in lanyards holding paper cups.

I had picked the hour on purpose.

"Carrie?"

A woman in black leggings and a company fleece hurried across the marble toward me.

It was Brynn.

I had only seen her in photos from office parties, always at the edge of the frame.

In person she was taller and prettier than I remembered.

She had a glossy ponytail and an open, worried face.

"Oh my God, you shouldn't be walking around," she said. "Here, let me get the door for you. Are you okay? Is it your knee? I feel so awful about all of it."

"Thank you," I said.

I meant it.

She held the second door, and she matched my pace across the lobby, and she asked nothing I would have been rude to answer.

I thought, for one stupid second, that I might have been wrong about her.

"Is Dean upstairs?" I asked.

"I'll call him right now."

She took out her phone and made the call, and when it was done she said, "He's coming down. Do you want to sit?"

"I'll stand."

The elevator opened.
