Chapter 18: Gethin's Shift
Verity's POV
The letter from the Trust came on Tuesday, and it said the complaint against Gethin had been withdrawn.
It said the caller's number had been traced to a switchboard in Mayfair, and that a Mr Wrenfield had sent a signed statement.
Gethin read it twice at the kitchen table and then folded it very small.
"Reinstated," he said. "They've put me on tonight. Seven till seven."
"Already?"
"We're short at Christmas. We're always short." He didn't smile. "I'll sleep this afternoon."
He had been quiet since the gala.
He had stood in front of four hundred people and said he wanted more of me, and since then he'd barely met my eye.
At five, I caught him in the hall with his bag half packed and his jacket over one arm.
"Gethin."
"Mm."
"You said it into a microphone. You can say it into a hallway."
He put the bag down.
"My ex told me I was married to the sirens," he said. "She was right. Two years. I missed her sister's wedding and her birthday, and I slept through her dinner party in the next room."
"That's what she said?"
"That's what she said, and she cried on the doorstep, and I wasn't home to see her go because I was out on a call." He rubbed his face with both hands. "I'm good at the job. I'm bad at being waited for."
"You think you'll do that to me."
"I think I'd be one more man who doesn't pick up."
I stepped closer, until my hands were on the lapels of his uniform jacket.
"You don't have to be here," I said. "You have to tell me when you're not, and when you'll be back. Then you come back."
