Chapter 16: Her Terms

Forever.

The word sat in the cold corridor between the three of us.

Evander's hand came down on my shoulder from behind, warm and heavy.

"Then that's what we do," he said. "Under the moon, in front of every pack. I'll bite you."

The healer looked up at him.

"Majesty, it's not a wedding ring. It doesn't come off."

"I know what forever means."

"I wonder," she said, and let her attendant wheel her away.

He shut the door and turned to me.

His face was lit up. I'd never seen it like that.

"Hesper. Both of them live. You keep yours. I keep mine. We just have to..."

"No."

The light went out of his face so fast it hurt to watch.

"No to the bite?"

"No to you biting me."

I pulled the blanket off the floor and wrapped it around myself, because I wasn't having this argument naked.

"I've been handed around my whole life," I said.

He didn't interrupt.

"Every time, somebody decided where I went. Who I belonged to." I lifted my chin. "I'm not being claimed again. Not even by you. Not even on a beautiful night under the moon."
