Chapter 20: The Vault
I found the ledger on Sunday at dusk, on the lectern in the Hall, under three hanging lamps.
Oskar had set it there himself.
Forty or fifty wolves were hanging garlands of spruce and tying candle lanterns to the rafters for the Gathering.
They stopped when I came through the door.
I walked up the middle aisle in my good gray cardigan, with my white gloves in my fist and the green book in my pocket.
My boots were loud on the boards.
Oskar stood behind the lectern with one hand resting on the open leaves.
He wore his camel coat, and his smile was polite.
"Ms. Asplund. How good of you to come."
"Take your hand off the book."
"I'm keeping it safe for the solstice. The museum's vault is, frankly, a disgrace."
"Because you tore the lock out of it. Twice."
A murmur ran through the room.
"That is a serious charge," said Oskar, gently.
"It's a short one. Take your hand off the book."
"Our Law gives the Beta custody of the page when the Alpha is," and he let the pause hang, "unwell."
"The Alpha is unwell, and I'm done being polite about who owes him for it," I said.
