Chapter 21: Solstice Eve
He did not turn on a single lamp.
The fire in the great hearth was enough, red and low, and it lit the long room orange.
Gunnar shut the front door behind us, and I heard the bolt slide.
I stood in the middle of the wool rug in my coat and my boots, with my pulse going.
He crossed the floor and stopped in front of me.
For a long moment he only looked.
Then he lifted my glasses off my nose with two fingers and folded them.
He set them on the mantel, where I would be able to find them.
"I can't see you without those," I said.
"I'll be close."
He unbuttoned my coat and let it fall.
He knelt in front of me and unlaced my boots, one at a time.
He lifted each of my feet from the leather with both hands.
Then my wool socks.
He kissed the arch of my right foot.
I laughed, startled, and put my hand on his shoulder to keep my balance.
"Every inch," he said.
"What?"
"Tonight I'll take you one inch at a time, and I won't hurry."
"You told me you had nine hundred years of practice."
"I'm about to use all of it," said Gunnar.
He undressed me kneeling, with his mouth.
He opened my cardigan and kissed the skin that showed.
He unbuttoned my blouse and kissed my breastbone and each rib.
He drew my skirt down and kissed the soft round of my belly, over and over.
It was slow, with his beard dragging, and I shivered all the way to my toes.
When I stood naked in front of the fire, he pressed his face between my thighs for a long moment, only breathing against me.
Then he stood and pulled his sweater off over his head, and his jeans, and was naked too.
The bandage was gone.
A fresh pink seam ran from his shoulder blade down to his hip, where the stitches had been.
