Chapter 24: First Snow
I woke in his bed at dawn with the whole town under snow.
It lay white on the roofs and on the spruce, and the light coming through the window was blue and soft.
My shoulder throbbed, warm and steady.
Gunnar was not in the bed.
I knew exactly where he was.
I felt him in the kitchen, down the hall.
He was thinking about coffee, and about me, in that order, and he was happy.
I pulled on his flannel shirt and walked down the hall in my bare feet.
He stood at the black iron stove in his jeans, with his back to me and the pink seam of the scar showing.
On the table lay my glasses.
"I went back up for them at first light," he said, without turning around.
"The Stone was bare.
It had melted every flake."
"You didn't wake me."
"You were snoring."
"I do not snore."
"A little. Like a kitten."
I came up behind him and put my arms round his waist and my cheek against his bare back.
On his left shoulder, under the skin, a faint silver crescent pulsed once and was still.
"Sit," he said.
I sat on the counter, the way I had on the first morning.
He put a mug of coffee in my hands, and it was good.
"You fixed the pot," I said.
"I bought a new one."
