Chapter 20: What She Said in the Dark

The Queen's captain lowered his sword first.

He was a sensible man.

He looked at eight harbor guards with their blades out and at the Warden's white face, and he did the sum.

In the end they settled it in the loft doorway with the swords still in their hands.

Perrine would go to the lantern tower on the breakwater, in the Warden's custody, with the Crown's own guards on the stair.

Lucan would answer for her with his office.

If she was not at the foot of the court in nine days, the Warden of Saltmere would hand the Queen his sword.

He signed it on the captain's paper with a hand that did not shake.

Then he went to the Temple house.

He went alone, at ten that night, with the Queen's leave scrawled in the captain's hand, and he did not tell Perrine.

She would have stopped him.

The Temple house stood on the hill behind the harbor, a house of pale stone with a garden.

Two of the Queen's women dozed in the porch.

They let him in.

Aurelie had been given a small white room with a narrow bed and a prie-dieu.

She sat on the bed in a grey nightgown, with her hair down, mending a glove.
