Chapter 11: The Long Night

"Prim," Ivor said, without taking his eyes off Linden. "Snow. Buckets of it. Cloths. Now."

She ran.

Ivor bent and picked Linden up out of the snow.

He did it fast and stiff, holding Linden away from his chest.

It didn't help.

The second Ivor's hands touched him, the heat inside Linden roared up to meet them.

Linden grabbed his collar.

"Ivor."

"Don't talk."

Ivor carried him through the keep at a near run, past the shocked faces of the foxes, into the hoard-hall.

He laid Linden on a pile of old furs on the gold.

There were bearskins and wolfskins and a moth-eaten white thing that might once have been a king's cloak.

Then Ivor stepped back.

All the way back, to the edge of the candlelight.

Linden was burning.

There's no other word for it.

His skin was too tight. His clothes were sandpaper. He tore at the laces of his shirt and couldn't get them open, and nearly sobbed.

He could smell Ivor from across the room.

Smoke and flint and that warm, dark, bread-and-snow smell that was only him.

It went straight down Linden's spine.

"Come here," Linden said.

"No."

"Please."

"Linden."

"Please, I can't stand it, it's too much, just come here."

He sat up on his knees in the furs.

He got the shirt over his head at last and threw it.

Ivor's eyes followed it, then came back to Linden's bare chest and flushed skin.

Linden saw them go black to the edges.

Ivor's throat flickered gold.

Just for a second.

Ivor turned his face away.

"Put that back on," he said hoarsely.

"You want me." Linden could smell it. He could see it, under the line of Ivor's trousers, unmistakable, and his whole body clenched. "You want me, I want you, it's simple."
