Chapter 26: The Ninth Tail

Lucian laughed.

"Prove it how?" he said. "Show us a cut? Show us a tear?"

Linden didn't look at him.

He looked at Osric.

"Open your shirt," he said.

Osric didn't move.

"You brought this to my Court, Fenmore," the speaker said. "Open it."

Osric undid the clasp of his fur collar.

Then he unlaced his shirt and pulled the linen apart, his eyes on Linden's.

There it was, over his heart.

A white crescent, thin as a new moon.

Linden had seen it every night for three years, from across a bed.

He had never once been allowed to touch it.

"White foxes are born with nine tails," he said. "Every one of us knows it."

The whole moor had gone quiet enough to hear him.

"And every one of us knows a tail can be given, to pull back someone who's dying. It leaves a white crescent over the heart." He lifted his right hand. "And it answers the one who gave it."

He laid his bare palm flat on Osric's chest.

Osric's skin jumped.

For a second, nothing.

Then the scar lit under Linden's hand.
