Chapter 11: The Den

We came down off the ridge long after the pack had turned back, two wolves with nobody behind us.

Ronan led me up a deer path to the oldest place on Hollow Creek land.

It was a den of stone, half cave and half cabin, built into the hill by the first Alpha.

Inside there was a fire pit, a stack of wood, and a bed of old furs.

He shifted at the mouth of it, and I turned my head away.

I heard him pull a pair of trousers off a hook.

"You can change back now," he said. "Think of your hands."

I thought of my hands.

It hurt less than the first time, and then I stood in the doorway in nothing but moonlight and hair.

Ronan looked at me for a long moment.

His eyes were amber, and the amber didn't fade.

"I didn't know you'd be white," he said.

"Neither did I."

"You were the most beautiful thing I've ever seen."

He said it plainly.

My face went hot all the way to my chest.

"Celia said something," I told him. "While we were running. She said it was exactly what my mother was."

"I know. I heard her."

"You knew my mother?"

"Everyone did. She was in the pack house, a maid. I was sixteen the year you were born."

His mouth tightened.

"She was the last white in the valley. She never shifted where anyone could see."

I stood very still.

I had a few clear memories of her, and none of them had ever included that.
