Chapter 18: The Ridge

Nobody in the hall moved.

I stared at the little white wolf's head swinging on its chain.

"What did you say?" I said.

"I said I took it off her," Celia said, and her voice was warm.

"She was my maid, you know."

"She did my hair every morning for six years."

Ronan stepped in front of me.

"Hold her," he told the sentries, without looking away from his stepmother.

"The cellar. Nobody speaks to her, and nobody touches her."

"The council hears this at dawn."

"You can't hold the Luna of this pack."

"I'm holding a woman who hired six wolves from Blackwater to kill me."

Two sentries took her arms.

She went without a struggle.

As she passed me, she closed her fist over the necklace.

"Ask him what his father saw," she said very softly.

Then she was gone, and Vanessa was crying in a corner, and Tilly had her arm around me.

I don't remember walking out of the hall.

I remember the cold air, and the steps of the porch, and Ronan's hand at the back of my neck.

"Come with me," he said.

"Where?"

"Where nobody can talk to us."

We ran.

I let the white wolf out as soon as we passed the last fence, and his black one fell in beside me.

We went up the ridge together, through the dark pines, with the moon coming over the top.

It was almost full.

At the bare rock at the top, we stopped and shifted, and I stood shaking with the wind on my skin.

He caught me before I could fall.
